Drug Delivery Systems
Our studies have made efforts in modification and improvement of traditional drug delivery systems. We also try to transform new materials like inorganic nanoparticles and bio-membrane into drug carriers. We expect to endow these advanced carriers with more functionalities such as tumor-specific targeting and controlled release. Besides, these new delivery systems also process the potentials to combine with other therapeutic means like gene therapy, photothermal therapy and photodynamic therapy.

Translational Biomedical Materials
Our studies focus in biomedical materials and their application potential. We try to improve their design, synthesis, functionality, and controllability to meet the clinical demands of tumor treatments. We have studied in various materials including peptide and its derivatives, polymeric hydrogels, organic and inorganic nanoparticles, etc.

Advanced Theranostics Materials
Based on the current diagnosis and therapeutic means, we try to explore the potential of advanced materials (such as photocatalytic material, metal-organic framworks, etc.) in treating tumors. Besides, we try to combine traditional drugs with synthesis materials to improve the therapeutic outcomes meanwhile reduce side effects for tumor treatment.

Novel Therapeutic Strategies
Our group keep making efforts in developing novel therapeutic strategy for tumor treatment. Apart from traditional remedies, we are much more interested in exploiting cues from tumor microenvironment, tumor metabolism, interactions between cancer cells and immune cells/microorganisms, etc. Based on the understanding of tumor development, progression and metastasis, we also pay efforts in tumor normalization-associated strategies.

Dr. Xian-Zheng Zhang is a professor at Wuhan University (China), where he serves as vice dean of College of Chemistry and Molecular Sciences and the Director of Key Laboratory of Biomedical Polymers of Ministry of Education (Wuhan University). He is a Fellow of Biomaterials Science and Engineering (FBSE), and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC). He received his Ph.D. in polymer science from Wuhan University, China in 2000. From 2000 to 2001, he joined Institute of Materials Research and Engineering in Singapore as a research associate. From 2001 to 2004, he had been a postdoctoral associate at Cornell University, USA. Since 2004, he has being a professor at Wuhan University. Dr. Zhang focuses on the functional polymers/peptides and their biomedical applications. Various drug carriers and non-viral gene vectors were constructed for significantly improved efficacy of tumor therapy. Importantly, Dr. Zhang proposed a new concept of “Tumor-Triggered Targeting” for targeted tumor therapy. Dr. Zhang has written over 500 peer-reviewed articles with more than 18000 citations (H-Index: 71), 5 book chapters and 20 patents worldwide. He has received many awards and honors in China, such as Chang Jiang Scholar, the Funds for Distinguished Young Scholar of China, National Ten-Thousand Talent Award and the Leading Entrepreneurial Hi-Tech Talents etc. Now, he is the Editor-in-Chief of Materials Today Chemistry and the editorial board member of several international journals.
